Increasingly, male clients are seeking therapy to navigate the complexities of their sexual identities. This includes instances where straight men engage in sexual encounters with other men, causing them to question their sexual orientation. Additionally, there are cases where gay men enter into heterosexual marriages, struggling to embrace and identify with their true sexual orientation openly. Childhood sexual abuse can further complicate matters, leading to confusion regarding one’s sexual identity.

This inspirational talk aims to provide valuable insights into effectively addressing the concerns of male clients grappling with confusion surrounding their sexual orientation. Our discussion features Joe Kort, a seasoned psychotherapist who has dedicated his career to promoting social acceptance and professional treatment of issues related to sexual health and the LGBT community. Dr. Kort shares the latest perspectives and research findings about male sexuality and its implications for therapeutic interventions with men.

During this interview, we explore the distinctions between bisexuality and sexual fluidity, shedding light on how both women and men perceive these concepts. More than expected, straight men engage in sexual encounters with other men, often driven by transactional motives rather than relational ones. However, this behavior frequently causes significant distress and confusion among these individuals. Even well-trained trauma therapists may find themselves challenged by the need for appropriate language, comfort, and skill sets to guide their clients through this intricate process.

Dr. Kort offers valuable clinical insights and questions to aid clients in self-identifying their sexual identity and orientation. He also provides guidance on distinguishing between heterosexual men who have a preference for sexual encounters with men and individuals experiencing internalized homophobia. Addressing vulnerability, isolation, and shame issues, particularly among young heterosexual individuals, is a crucial focus of this inspirational discussion.
