General Description

This course focuses on the biopsychosocial aspects of female sexual dysfunctions. It moves forward from the traditional view of function and pathology toward the variation of healthy sexuality as satisfactory for the individual. Evaluation of personal distress is the key point when considering intervention for a specific condition. It’s acknowledged that most of the content is related to cisgender heterosexual individuals and couples, as it reflects the current limitation in research on diverse populations. However, available evidence on LGBTQ+ sexuality is integrated. Participants will be instructed on assessment, diagnosis, main factors involved (predisposing, precipitating, maintaining), different patient profiles, and the latest treatment options. The program includes 6 online asynchronous sessions on sexual history taking, desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain disorders. Each lecture comprehends the evidence from the most recent scientific literature and clinical examples. The course also comprises the complexities of women’s sexuality throughout midlife and menopause, where common symptoms and sexual difficulties are presented, together with therapeutic options.

Learning Objectives

The overall purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to:

  1. Recognize the most frequent clinical manifestations of sexual dysfunctions, distinguish the key aspects of the definitions, identify the risks and associated factors of sexual dysfunctions through a biopsychosocial perspective, and utilize their competence on the available treatment options through a patient-centered management approach.
  2. Receive a sound knowledge base on the main sexual dysfunctions, apply the integrated approach (medical and psychological) to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of sexual disorders, and enrich their clinical skills in differential diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and treatment planning with the experience of some leading experts.
