Content and Aim: The paedophilic disorder is a devastating condition, being often accompanied by intensive personal stress and high comorbidity on the one hand and being a major risk factor for child sexual abuse on the other hand. However, there is still little known about this paraphilic disorder and it often is falsely equated with sexual offending, especially by public media. Consequently, affected persons hardly seek professional help because of the fear of being socially rejected. Moreover, pedophilia is a neglected subject in healthcare curricula and thus leads to great insecurities among mental health professionals when faced with this issue. However, in recent years more scientific effort was made to better understand the paedophilic disorder, and prevention and treatment programs have been developed to treat affected people and address associated social problem adequately and therefore reduce the risk of child sexual abuse.
The aim of this webinar is to share our yearlong experience of treating persons with paedophilic disorders in the German Prevention Project Dunkelfeld (PPD) and give an insight in 1) how to diagnose the disorder and distinguish it from other disorders related to sexual offending against children; 2) identifying individual resources as well as risk factors of the patients; 3) providing well founded information for affected persons and 4) medical and therapeutical treatment options.
