Following undergraduate education at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, I completed doctoral training in clinical psychology at SUNY Stony Brook in 1972, and served on the faculty of Rutgers University and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from 1972-2006.
During my 35 year tenure at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, I founded and co-directed the first inter-disciplinary training program in Sexual Health with Dr. Sandra Leiblum, and served as founding director of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center. Other academic and administrative positions included Chief Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry and Director of Medical Education in Psychiatry from 1992-2001. I served also as Chair of the Medical School Appointments and Promotions Committee and Associate Dean of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from 2001-2003. In 2007, I accepted a full-time appointment to New England Research Institutes (NERI) and served as Chief Scientist at NERI until 2018. I serve currently as Full Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine and as adjunct professor of Medicine at Rutgers – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
Over the course of my 45 year academic and research career, I received more than 30 grants and awards and published 12 books, 33 book chapters, and more than 450 papers in peer-reviewed journals (H-Index=117). Additionally, I convened and chaired international consensus conferences on a broad range of health research topics in medicine and psychiatry, and served as a frequent consultant to the NIH, FDA and pharmaceutical industry.
Specific areas of clinical expertise and research focus include:
- Measurement of health outcomes, including design and development of state-of-the-art, FDA endorsed patient reported outcome measures (PROM’s) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) assessments. Extensive experience in PRO design and validation.
- Design and conduct of multi-national studies and patient registries. Recent examples include a national registry of combat-exposed veterans with PTSD (Project VALOR), a multi-national registry of hypogonadal men (RHYME), and the first national study of women with sexual desire disorders (HSDD Registry). I served also as Principal Investigator on 20+ NIH, DoD and privately-funded clinical trials in a wide range of therapeutic areas (see complete CV).
- Design and testing of novel, web-based training in evidence-based treatments for PTSD (Project OUTFIT, PTSD Clinicians Exchange). With colleagues at the National Center for PTSD, I have co-directed several large, randomized trials of web-based training efficacy and outcomes for behavioral health clinicians in multiple service sectors.
- Best practice clinical guidelines development and dissemination. I have extensive leadership experience in systematic review processes, and application of Delphi methodology for practice guidelines development and dissemination in multiple therapeutic areas in medicine and psychiatry.
- Professional development workshops, in-service training and program design. I have designed and evaluated multiple professional development programs for cross-disciplinary training and education in multiple specialty areas.
My current objectives are to serve as a senior consultant and advisor to academic institutions, government agencies and the life sciences industry in my areas of expertise summarized above.
