Integrating the Wheel of Consent in Sex Therapy
1h 30m

Relationship and Intimacy Coach
Content and aim: Dr. Betty Martin has had her hands on people professionally for over 40 years, and she has learned a few things. One of those is that everyone seems to go along with touch that doesn’t inspire them – and then try to like it! She has a solution.
The Wheel of Consent is a simple and unique practice for couples who want to learn and heal (and enjoy each other!) It takes apart Receiving and Giving and distinguishes between who is doing and who it’s for. This distinction opens four roles, each with its own challenges, insights and joys. It shows you that Receiving and Giving are not what you thought they were! You learn to tell them apart and fall in love with both of them – completely and equally.
This lecture introduces you to the Wheel of Consent as a practice and as a model. You’ll have a brief overview of what it has revealed over the years about dynamics between partners. Then we’ll look more deeply at how it benefits your clients (and yourself!)
Learning objectives: The participants will:
- Describe the four roles, or quadrants, of desire and consent.
- Clarify the difference between want-to and willing-to and when each one is appropriate and enjoyable.
- Understand how the practice of the Wheel of Consent develops self-responsibility and differentiation.
- Distinguish between the Wheel of Consent and Sensate Focus

Dr Betty Martin has had her hands on people professionally for over 40 years, first as a chiropractor and, upon retiring from that practice, as a certified surrogate partner and somatic sex educator.
Her explorations in somatic-based therapy and practice informed her creation of The Wheel of Consent® and her book ‘The Art of Receiving and Giving: The Wheel of Consent’. Betty has also created a widely used five-day practitioner training, co-founded the School of Consent, and has trained others to teach her model around the world.
Betty mentors helping professionals across disciplines (from psychotherapists to sex workers and other hands-on practitioners) and speaks on topics such as learning to receive and give, normalizing sexual desire, bodily autonomy, ethics for practitioners, and supporting people in power, pleasure, and vulnerability. She is known as a grounded, knowledgeable, down-to-earth podcast guest and workshop leader.
