Content and aim:
In this deeply reflective and engaging presentation, Consultant Clinical Psychologist Laura Scarrone Bonhomme moves beyond standard clinical theory to examine the therapist’s own experience within gender-affirming care. The session explores how trans-normativity and cultural stereotypes influence how both clients and clinicians perceive and navigate gender identity.
Drawing on real-world clinical cases, Laura discusses the complex nuances of medical transition—such as navigating shame around testosterone-induced libido increases, or helping clients determine whether surgical intervention stems from true internal need or external pressure to conform.
Together, we will examine core psychotherapeutic themes, including sexual shame, trauma, and the unique dynamics of couples navigating a gender transition together.

Learning Objectives: By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Examine Intersectional & Co-Occurring Issues: Gain a research-informed understanding of the lived experiences and overlapping challenges trans and non-binary communities frequently face.
  • Challenge Clinical Misinformation: Address myths surrounding detransition, trans-normativity, and ableism that often hinder a clinician’s ability to offer equitable care.
  • Understand Psychosexual HRT Effects: Recognize the physical and psychological impacts of hormone replacement therapy on client sexuality and sexual function.
  • Navigate Genital Dysphoria & Incongruence: Explore the broad spectrum of genital dysphoria to better support clients in managing related distress.
  • Dismantle Sexual Shame: Deconstruct historical and outdated concepts—such as autogynephilia—to help clients unpack internalized sexual shame.
