Content and Aim: The course begins by exploring the critical role of emotion and emotional processing in therapy. Professor Leslie Greenberg then talks about the significance of addressing automatically generated amygdala-based emotions. Through detailed discussions, the course covers techniques for assessing emotions to distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive, as well as primary and secondary emotions.

The foundational principles of the Emotion-Focused approach to therapy are illuminated, with a strong emphasis on the transformative power of changing emotion with emotion. This concept comes to life with captivating video examples. Additionally, the course sheds light on the critical role of memory consolidation in the emotional transformation process.

Participants gain hands-on instructions to develop moment-by-moment attunement to affect, tuning into bodily felt feelings, and methods such as two-chair dialogues to facilitate conversations between different parts of the self.

Leslie Greenberg, Ph.D. is Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Psychology at York University in Toronto and the primary developer of Emotion-focused therapy

He has authored the original books on Emotion in Psychotherapy (1986) and Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (1988). More recent books include Emotion-focused Couples Therapy: The dynamics of emotion, love and power (2008), Therapeutic Presence (2012), Emotion-focused therapy: Theory and practice (2015), Case Formulation in Emotion-Focused Therapy (2015), Emotion -Focused Therapy of Generalized Anxiety (2017), and Emotion-focused Therapy of Forgiveness(2019) and most recently Changing Emotion with Emotion (2021) and Shame and Anger in Therapy (2023). He has received the Distinguished Research Career award of the International Society for Psychotherapy Research as well as the Carl Rogers and the Distinguished Professional Contribution to Applied Research of the American Psychology Association. He has also received the Canadian Psychological Association Professional Award for distinguished contributions to Psychology as a profession. He is a past President of the Society for Psychotherapy Research. He currently trains people internationally in emotion-focused approaches.
